Perhaps we once imagined that the doors to our
consulting rooms could shut out the world. No longer.
Today, in the post 9/11 era, we are all too aware that the world barges in with our patients. While it is a world replete with technological wonders and economic opportunities for some, it is also filled with the mute suffering of those who have been rendered helpless and hopeless on account of their race, religion, class, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or political affiliation. This conference is dedicated to the belief that we cannot and must not turn a deaf ear to their silent cries and that what we have learned about empathy, trust, forgiveness, and the intergenerational effects of trauma can be used to alleviate their suffering. We are also convinced that we have much to learn from the experience and wisdom of writers, educators, journalists, artists, lawyers, religious leaders, and politicians.
We invite you to join us in creating safe, open dialogues that will help the silenced to speak.
SILENT ART AUCTION
Issues of political and social justice have often served as a direct impetus in the creation of works of art, both representational and abstract. Other creations, though not directly inspired by that impulse, serve to create a mood of serious contemplation. To reflect the impact of artistic creativity on the theme of the conference, Bystanders No More, a collection of art works, donated by respected professional artists, will be on display during the conference. All works will be available for purchase through a silent auction.
CONFERENCE COMMITTEE:
DORIS BROTHERS, CHAIR • JANE LEWIS, VICE-CHAIR
BERNICE BELTH • NANCY HICKS • GRETE LAINE • BILL LEWIS • SUSANNE WEILL

ABOUT ALICE LEORA BRIGGS
This detail comes from the profoundly disquieting and beautiful drawing that artist, Alice Leora Briggs, created by using an ancient etching technique called sgaffito. It is one of many in Dreamland, a book she created with writer, Charles Bowden. The book documents the surreality of Cuidad Juarez, a city where drug cartels inflict murderous atrocities on a daily basis that neither the citizens nor the government acknowledge. Briggs has exhibited her drawings and architectural installations in museums, galleries, and nonprofit spaces across the United States and in Europe. |
